Identify the theme and intended header
Record the theme you are editing and the header where the logo should appear. If you have a separate draft theme, distinguish it from the one the store actually uses.
| Field | What to identify |
|---|---|
| Theme | The exact current or draft theme. |
| Placement | The header or other intended logo area. |
| Artwork | The approved version for that surface. |
| Copy | The file assigned to this task. |
| Open question | Any custom theme control that differs. |
Use your own store identity, not Shopify brand assets. If a custom theme has other controls, follow its instructions rather than assume every theme has the same panel.
Open the theme logo controls
Shopify help documents Online Store, Edit theme, Theme settings, Logo, then Select image. Choose your approved copy.

Check which image is assigned after selection. Keep the original safe and confirm that the chosen copy belongs to this header and background. The file shown in a picker should match the one you meant to use.
Set the width in the available space
The help page states a maximum logo width of 300 pixels and names Desktop logo width. This describes its setting, not the required source file width for every custom theme.

A display width and a source image width are separate values. Do not reduce every source to 300 pixels because a control mentions that number. Pick a display choice that leaves the full name readable and enough room for the rest of the header.
| Check | Question |
|---|---|
| Whole name | Can every letter be read? |
| Menu | Does it still have room? |
| Shape | Does the mark keep its proportions? |
| Surroundings | Is the intended room around it present? |
Do not force a wider display to fill empty space if it crowds the menu. If the complete mark cannot fit, consider an approved arrangement.
Check two screen widths
- Inspect the header in a wide view.
- Inspect a phone view when available.
- Check the symbol, name and small details.
- Compare the menu and other header elements.
- Check whether the chosen background version still works.
Choose a layout that suits the available space
Diagnose blur without changing the identity
If the preview is blurry, inspect the actual source and loaded copy. If it is crowded, revisit the display choice or layout. Those are different problems.
Save and confirm the real store header
Use Save after changing the documented theme settings.

Open the actual storefront that should use this theme. Confirm the intended image and header choice rather than stop at the editor preview. If it differs, inspect which theme and image the store uses.
Keep the theme name, filename and width choice with your logo files. The update is complete when the saved store shows the intended whole mark with readable wording and room for the header controls.
