Choose the already prepared icon

Confirm the site and intended icon before changing settings. An icon is a small browser mark, not necessarily the complete header logo. Keep the chosen artwork and copy for this site together.

Choose a readable favicon before installation

Make an installation record
FieldWhat to keep
SiteThe exact site being updated.
Default copyThe intended regular browser icon.
Optional variationAn approved browser dark mode copy if you have one.
SourceThe approved original artwork.

Do not crop an arbitrary part of a long name just to get a small square. If the artwork is not ready, finish that decision before installation.

Prepare a copy that suits this upload. Do not assume every existing icon in a kit has the dimensions this panel recommends. Keep its proportions and check the small mark after making the copy.

If the panel rejects the file, use the current error and official guidance. Avoid inferring that a different format can never work from a filename mentioned elsewhere.

Upload the default icon first

Squarespace documents opening the Favicon panel, uploading the default image and choosing Save. An optional browser dark mode image can be added after the default.

Check the assigned copy in the panel before saving. The browser dark mode option should be an approved variation, not an automatic reversal of every color. Keep its role distinct from the default.

If your interface differs, open the current platform help for the Favicon panel rather than guess another settings path.

If the previous icon stays

Squarespace suggests clearing the browser cache and restarting when the favicon does not update.

First confirm that the intended file was saved for the correct site. Check that you are viewing that site rather than another tab or preview. A browser holding an older icon is one possible branch, not proof that the upload failed.

Use a suitable browser check and follow current help if the result persists. This guide does not set a guaranteed refresh time. Keep the earlier copy until the intended result can be inspected.

Check the actual browser tab

  1. Open the intended saved site.
  2. Inspect the actual tab icon.
  3. Compare its shape with the approved copy.
  4. Check another browser view when useful.
  5. Record which site and copy produced the result.

If the correct icon is too crowded, return to the prepared artwork task. If it is absent or old, inspect the installation and refresh branch. Finish when the saved intended icon is visible in the selected site and browser view.

A browser result and a search result are separate checks. Use the favicon preparation guide for the search setup boundary instead of assuming this installation guarantees display.
